It’s so easy it’s ridiculous. It’s so..."

“
Photography is Easy, Photography is Difficult by Paul Graham

It’s so easy it’s ridiculous. It’s so easy that I can’t even begin – I just don’t know where to start. After all, it’s just looking at things. We all do that. It’s simply a way of recording what you see – point the camera at it, and press a button. How hard is that? And what’s more, in this digital age, its free – doesn’t even cost you the price of film. It’s so simple and basic, it’s ridiculous.

It’s so difficult because it’s everywhere, every place, all the time, even right now. It’s the view of this pen in my hand as I write this, it’s an image of your hands holding this book, Drift your consciousness up and out of this text and see: it’s right there, across the room – there… and there. Then it’s gone. You didn’t photograph it, because you didn’t think it was worth it. And now it’s too late, that moment has evaporated. But another one has arrived, instantly. Now. Because life is flowing through and around us, rushing onwards and onwards, in every direction.
”

- Source: http://www.americansuburbx.com/2009/07/theory-paul-graham-photography-is-easy.html

Penelope Umbrico

Penelope Umbrico

Image Typewriter

Image Typewriter

Video

Screendump #1 On Virtual Strolls, the book, is referenced in a new article by Helen Westgeest:...

Screendump #1 On Virtual Strolls, the book, is referenced in a new article by Helen Westgeest: Digital Appropriation as Photographic Practice and Theory.

Michael Wolf on ‘peeping’ via Google Street View and...

Michael Wolf on ‘peeping’ via Google Street View and his workflow.

A screenshot of GSV used as a “press” photo, as seen...

A screenshot of GSV used as a “press” photo, as seen on the website of Dutch newspaper the Volkskrant (and updated later by a more conventional photograph, as you can see by clicking the link).

A very nice little videoreview by Jorg Colberg of our...

A very nice little videoreview by Jorg Colberg Screendump #1, On Virtual Strolls can be bought at the website of the publisher The Eriskay Connection.

From the press release:

“The Screendump-project is an ongoing study and exploration of photographing in the virtual world. The first publication from this project (#1) by Suzan Geldhoff and Karin Krijgsman is about photography and virtual strolls through Google Street View. Following a number of texts and a collection of works, the outlines of a new genre occur in a new photography era: the age of virtual photography.

Screendump #1 contains work by: Michael Wolf, Mishka Henner, Hans Gremmen, Jon Rafman, Diederick Overbeke and Nicolas Mason. They find their pictures on Google Street View, which they roam day in day out. They are purposely maneuvering between the limits and the possibilities of this new technique. It produces images that can refer to the timeless, classic landscape and street photography, but also images that just relentlessly expose the modern zeitgeist.”
